This year’s list can be split into four vague sections – tunes from bands completely new to me, tunes from reliable Slacker Shack favourites, tunes that have popped up on quite a few other end of year lists (I’m not copying, some tunes are just bona fide classics) and tunes from so-so albums that shone brightly as their co-creations stumbled. When compiling Slacker Shack’s Top 30 Tunes of 2019 the usual simple rules applied – only one tune per artist, dip into as much music as possible, don’t just pick singles and keep hip-hop for a later list (our hip-hop Top 30 comes later this month). Loads more than usual – and whittling it down has been harder than ever. Maybe as a way to turn off from all the gloom I ended up compiling a long list of tunes this year that clocks in at around the 1400 mark. Bloody good job we’ve had loads of amazing music to listen to then eh? But, most importantly, GWAR has written some of the raunchiest, silliest and hookiest heavy metal songs, four of which were performed at the Tiny Desk to a giddy audience. The interplanetary warriors have made comic books, beer, BBQ sauce and, um, adult toys.
